Ved middelhavet begynder træer og planter at springe ud allerede i februar, hvor Tu b’Shvat festen falder. ”Tu” står for tallet 15 på hebraisk, mens ”shvat” er den sidste vintermåned. På den 15. dag i shvat er det ifølge gamle jødiske kilder træernes nytår.

Tu b’Shvat er en jødisk forårsfest. Den stammer fra antikken og er blevet genoplivet som en populær fest i staten Israel efter mange århundreder, hvor de færreste jøder havde mulighed for at dyrke jorden og plante den til.

Traditionen siger, at man på denne dag skal spise syv forskellige slags frugt. I moderne tid er det blevet en skik at plante træer på denne dag.
